Starke awarded OAM
~
from The City Messenger - Chris Day reporting
"When I found out I thought 'who the hell nominated me?' - 'I'm buggered if I know,'" Mr Starke, 66, said. "You don't ask Government House, and they wouldn't tell you if you did, so it will remain a pleasant mystery."
Through his work at Greenhill galleries, Mr Starke has helped put SA artists into the spotlight, including the likes of Tom 0'CaIlaghan, Trevor McNamara and Andrew Baines. "I try to encourage lots of new artists as it's a very brave thing for someone to come to a gallery owner with their paintings.
"As soon as a painting is on the wall it becomes the property of everyone and people either love it or hate it." Mr Starke also has supported many charities, including the Red Cross and the Women's and Children's Hospital, by holding fundraising exhibitions. "I come from a family where we didn't have a lot of money but I was brought up being told to help other people. People ask (for help) and I try and do what I can."
Father of SA Art Gallery communications manager Miranda and City Messenger reporter Petra, Mr Starke will be presented with his OAM at a ceremony at Government House later this year. Greenhill Galleries has been recognised as one of Adelaide's most important commerical art galleries since 1972 when it was established by Veda Swain. Russell Starke became Director in 1998 and continues the Greenhill tradition, dealing in fine art by prominent Australian artists, and leading the way forward with works by emerging talents in a variety of media.

We often liaise with charitable organisations to hold a preview night before the opening of an exhibition. This gives clients the chance to see the collection first, and the ticket sales benefit the charity.
Buying from Greenhill
At Greenhill, we pride ourselves on having a close relationship with our clients. We take the time to find out what you're looking for and we make a habit of personally contacting you when a piece arrives in the gallery that we know you'll like. With our enormous range of art works, we are well equipped to assist in the acquisition of pieces for private and corporate collections. To this end, we can often arrange on site visits so you can see exactly what a painting looks like in the space you've got.
We often liaise with interior designers and have helped build collections in apartment complexes, resorts and hotels. In addition, we can commission works from many of our artists, so if you know what you want but can't find it anywhere, we'll find the artist to create it for you.
Internet Services
Our expansion onto the internet provides all our clients, whether local, national or international, with the chance to view and purchase from our exhibitions and browse through works in stock. View our current exhibition or visit our archives to discover other works held in the gallery - choose from paintings, prints, sculpture, glass, ceramics or jewellery, or one of the more collectible items we hold in stock. We are able to arrange delivery to anywhere in the world and aim to help clients, no matter where they may be, to find the artwork they are looking for.
