Artist Statement
After initially completing a degree in Events Management at the University of South Australia straight out of school, Sara realised she would like to move into more artistic pursuits and began studying at the Centre for Creative Photography in Adelaide. This was spurred by a long time appreciation for the art of photography, especially historical film processes.
Sara at once fell in love with the magic of the darkroom and prefers to use film, usually black and white, rather than digital medium in her work. She particularly enjoys the idea of alternative processes, making new photographs look old and post processing techniques such as collage and hand colouring, which she is currently exploring in her new work.
Sara likes to leave the meanings of her works open to the viewer to decide, and is interested to hear how people draw different conclusions from their own personal experiences.
She is inspired by artists such as Blue Mitchell, Emmet Gowin and Mark Borthwick who each employ a variety of unique techniques, causing their photographs to hold a certain mysterious intrigue.
These influences are evident in her current exhibition at the Highway, focusing on the obscurity and confusion of the dream world. The exhibition can be viewed until May 14th.
Sara has completed the Certificate IV in Photoimaging and is now continuing on to finish at Diploma level.
