Coralie Armstrong

Coralie Armstrong was born in 1945 in central western NSW. After studying science at the University of Sydney, Coralie pursued an artistic career by attending evening classes with Allan Hanson & Fred Bates at the Royal Art Society of NSW in 1966, 1967 & 1970.

An art scholarship in 1967 sponsored landscape watercolour classes with G. K. Townshend and this was followed by evening art classes in London in 1968 and 1969 with Raymond Coxon and landscape classes with Fred Bates in Sydney from 1970 to 1980.

After moving to Adelaide in 1981, tutorials in painting continued with Bruce Vinall 1981-86 and Robert Hannaford in 1984.  
 
Coralie's works have been exhibited widely throughout NSW and South Australia, receiving numerous prizes and awards:

•  Condobolin, NSW in 1972, 1973, 1975; Wellington in 1976 and Dubbo 1983.

•  Tea Tree Gully, SA in 1984, 1986, & 1988; Campbelltown 1988 & 2006; Murray Bridge 1992, 1995, & 2000; Lobethal 1992, 1994; Balaklava 2000 (miniature) and Clare 2003, 2007

•  Of particular note, a painting of the Bogan River was hung in the Wynne exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1973 and a portrait of Judge Frank McGrath was hung in the Portia Geach competition for portraiture in 1974. A portrait of Adelaide hills identity, Mr Lofty Ward was commended in the Doug Moran Portrait competition in 1988. A painting of Tanunda won the Princes Fine Art Award in 1996 and a landscape watercolour entitled “Rocks” was acquired by Broken Hill City Art Gallery in 1993. A portrait of Mike Tyler won the people section of the RSASA 150th competition in 2006 and a watercolour of Ediacaran fossils won the section for works on paper of the 2006 Waterhouse Natural History art competition.

Exhibitions held at the Royal Art Society (NSW) 1972 and 1990; Holdsworth Gallery, Sydney 1976; Lithgow Valley Pottery 1977; Lombard Gallery, Adelaide 1985; Royal SA Society of Arts Gallery 1995 and 2008; John Dunn Gallery, Bridgewater 1996 and 1998; Albert Street Gallery, Mittagong (NSW) 1997 and 2000; Greenhill Gallery 2001 and 2003 (shared); The Place on Unley 2002; Scarlatties Cellar Door Gallery, Clare Valley 2003, Hahndorf Academy 2005, Gallery M 2007, Charles Melton Wines SALA 2009.

Coralie Armstrong is a Fellow of both the Royal Art Society of NSW and the Royal South Australian Society of Arts and has been a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute since 1973.
