Biography
Born in London’s autumn of 1937, Sibylla Tydeman first developed a keen interest in natural history and drawing during a time spent as an evacuee in Yorkshire.
Her subsequent enrolment in London’s Camberwell School of Art, laid the foundations for a more formal training.
However, in 1956 at the age of nineteen, she emigrated to Australia along with the rest of her family, and her life gained a different pulse and direction. As has been the case with many women artists, marriage and children meant Sibylla’s life as an artist did not begin to find its full creative expression until she was in her 40s.
In 1977 Sibylla began to exhibit regularly and her reputation as one of South Australia’s most exquisite still life artists was forged. “Still life offered a way to overcome many hurdles of technical nature”, she says, “Nature as a model is most accepting of long sessions. That was the original concept, but as time passed I became aware of another dimension, another world in which other objects apart from ourselves exist and breathe. It truly is not just still, but life.”
Over the last twenty-five years Sibylla has continued to refine and expand her work. In 1989 she moved to Sydney, establishing a reputation for decorative wall painting and Trompe l’oei, as well as being a much sort after tutor in still life painting.
