On "The Heysen Trail"
Since 2001 I have been drawing the landscape of South Australia using the medium of ink and pastel and exploring the visual convention of the panorama and the topographical tradition.
Working at first along the eastern rain-shadow zone of the east Adelaide hills, and later at sites as far north as Wirrealpa Station, in the Flinders Ranges, and on the Heysen Trail at the tail end of the Fleurieu Peninsular, the resulting works attempt to capture the subtle moods and complex flowing forms of our regional landscapes.
I have selected an eclectic group of six works from the last four years, which represent the geographic scope of work done in the vicinity of the Heysen Trail. All the works are the result of a sustained and continuing engagement with drawing undertaken directly in the field, at locations that I have returned to repeatedly over a number of years.
