Thinking about it, I realise that as a landscape artist in South Australia, over the past 30 years, I have explored much of Heysen Trail country. I grew up in the Adelaide Hills, later moved to and fell in love with the Mid-North, and who cannot be moved by the Flinders Ranges.
My selection of work traverses these different landscapes. In them all, it is the evidence of human habitation (our place in the landscape, the world) that is the attraction.
Engler addresses the rich tapestry of Australian life in farming areas flirting with the connectivity that mankind builds. His spatial use and juxtaposition of rural impedimenta into uniquely Australian landscapes leaves the viewer questioning the shadows, life and intensity of these spaces. Engler’s unique style leaves an impression on the viewer that needs consideration and thought in order to achieve comfortableness with the landscape they are drawn into.

BIOGRAPHY
Dieter has exhibited since 1988 in solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and also in England, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and Germany.
His work features in many private collections worldwide.
"With Engler it is time to wind the clock back to memories of living in or passing through dusty, half forgotten towns somewhere in the wheat belt. The sun is down, low to the ground. The hour is late and in that last leaning of the light, the simplest of constructions, a light pole, a ladder, a fence or shed take on a quiet monumentality which the artist has had the wit to realise and pay respect to. With Engler's method of tipping the land, up behind his subjects and cutting in hard on the edges with his shadows, strong relief qualities are established which reinforce a sense of graving the subject, like carving stone."
